Rory Gallagher was the original Irish guitar hero, whose artistry with a battered ’61 Stratocaster became the stuff of legend. Bob Dylan and Muddy Waters admired him, the Rolling Stones tried to hire him – and his fans worshipped him. Clad in faded denim and a checked shirt, he sold 30 million records and became a charismatic icon of Irish music, inspiring musicians such as Brian May, The Edge, Slash and Johnny Marr. But away from the stage, Rory was an intensely private man. His closest confidante was his brother Dónal who accompanied Rory on his rise from their childhood Everly Brothers stage performances and the Showband scene across the North and South of the Irish border through to the deafening heart of the ‘70s rock scene in London – and far beyond. Now, Dónal, along with insights from Rory’s friends and admirers, takes us on a musical journey through the life and career of this shy guitar hero to better understand what made him so great.

On the 23rd of December 1996, the body of Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found on a laneway outside her holiday home near Schull. She had been due to travel back to France to spend Christmas with her husband, Daniel Toscan du Plantier and her son. Sophie’s murder was a devastating event, sending fear and shock waves across the local community in Cork and back to her family in Paris. Over 20 years later her family are still looking for answers. The Du Plantier Case tells the story of one of the most infamous murders in recent Irish history, looking at the case from both sides, a heartbroken family searching for the truth and a man campaigning for his innocence. Two conflicting stories, inextricably bound by one terrible crime.

RTÉ Investigates reveals serious environmental and safety hazards within the ESB Network spanning two decades, and hears from a whistleblower who has documented his concerns in protected disclosures. Whistleblower Séamus O’Loughlin: “I got the report on the fluid filled cables, I got the total leakage, up to a million litres in 20 year period. I just couldn’t compute it to be honest. I was astounded.” An internal ESB report from 2014, which is marked confidential, states that: “leaks could present a very high environmental impact, given the proximity to the Grand Canal.” The ESB report goes on to say that the underground cable oil is “not considered compatible with watercourses and the associated eco systems, in rivers and canals and the sea.”
