Set against the backdrop of the political violence that rocked India, and West Bengal in particular, in the late 1960s, it tells the story of an aged widow in a village who goes to Calcutta to stay with relatives, but faces only exploitation. She moves to a slum, and finds her "own people" in a group of educated, unemployed youth, who are caught up inexorably in the prevalent violence.

Based on the timeless literary work by Manik Bandyopadhyay, Padma Nadir Majhi was directed by Gautam Ghosh. The movie illustrates the tumultuous lives of the fishermen and their families, living by the river Padma. Beautiful shots of the river, Ghosh's flair for realism and brilliant display of acting skills by noted actors of Bangladesh and West Bengal, including Utpal Dutt, Robi Ghosh, Abul Khayer, Raisul Islam Asad, Champa, and Rupa Ganguli, fetched the movie local and international honours.

On the wee hours of a December morning, the ring of a telephone shatters the quietness of the Sen household. Anuradha, Who answers the call, is stunned to hear the caller on the other side of the line. Her husband had met with a fatal accident in Thailand and had sunk into coma and she needed to take the next available flight and reach the hospital. Both Anuradha and Sohini's world are shattered. Both the Mrs. Sen did not know how to address this crisis that they had never imagined in their wildest dreams. The doctor is called and he asks Anuradha to admit Sohini to the Hospital once more. In the Hospital, Sohini is diagnosed as having her internal organs damaged and internal bleeding happening. Doctor's however clearly mention that it was only days before Sohini would actually die.

Subhankar Sen, the teacher of St. Peter's school fell for Medha, but never admitted it before her. Neha loved him but waited for his recognition. But unfortunately that came only after he got married to Priti and decided to transfer to Kolkata.

A proud businessman Mr. Roy Chowdhury (Dilip Roy) stayed with his wife Samta (Shakuntala Barua), his daughter Rupa (Satabdi Roy) and his son Bikram (Soumitra Banerjee) in a hill town. The villagers knew him as a cruel and heartless person. Rupa went to meet a poor guy Sanjib (Prosenjit). They fell in love with each other. Sanjib stayed in a slum area. By profession, he was a milkman. He stayed with his widowed mother (Sumitra Mukherjee). On the other side, Sanjib's neighbor Biree (Biplab Chatterjee) stayed with his son and sister-in-law Padma (Sunetra Bhattacherjee). Bikram tried to rape the Padma, but Sanjib saved her. When Mr. Roychowdhury came to know that his daughter Rupa loved a poor person he became angry and tried to separate them. On the other side, Sanjib told his mother about Rupa. When his mother came to know that Rupa was Mr Roychowdhury's daughter she warned Sabjib about Mr. Roychowdhury. On that day she told him about their past.
