Elevation: A Backcountry Film 2013

With the scorching heat of summer still beating down upon us we’d like to help you rise above it with our latest cold blast of digital winter. We are more than proud to reveal our latest backcountry ski film. Behold ELEVATION! The allure of heading off into the unknown is a major part of what we love about the backcountry. Garrett Grove snapped this shot while on expedition in the Ruth Amphitheater, AK. Right then and there we knew it would be the perfect image to represent our human powered exploration into the cold crisp winter mountains.

It's true, there's nothing good on TV. 'TELE-VISION' is a different story, however. This season we're skinning into your living room to grab the remote and tune you into our finest backcountry ski flick yet. A strange "El Nino" year forced us to climb further, dig deeper and flat out try harder in order to create a film worthy of "A Powderwhore Production". Mission accomplished. 'TELE-VISION' is our continuing tradition of filming the top telemark skiers in the world playing in untracked powder mixed with big lines, humor, flight time, spills, and all the required deep face shots of a good ski porn. So put on your snuggie and top off the bowl of cheetos while you enjoy the program!

Despite the underwhelming winter of 2011-12, in which snowfall reached near record lows and avalanche conditions were unstable around the West, the Powderwhores were able to make the most of the conditions, with trips to Cerro Castillo, Chile; La Grave, France; the Antarctic Peninsula; Svalbard, Norway; British Columbia, Canada, and the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. The film features top backcountry skiers and snowboarders, including Chris Davenport, Jake Sakson, Andrew McLean, Seth Wescott, Dylan Freed, Noah Howell, Matt Reardon, Drew Stoecklein, Forrest Coots, Ian Provo, Neil Provo, Chuck Mumford, Darrell Finlayson, Bob Athey, PY Leblanc, Jason Thompson, Todd Stuart and other mountain characters.

Unearthing the previously unknown aspects of the ancient history of Saudi Arabia, experts uncover traces of a society from more than 7,000 years ago. Archeologists unearth evidence for an ancient ritual, completely unexpected and extraordinary as they continue to piece together Al Ula's rich history in time to welcome guests from around the world, as specialist teams seek to decipher the activities associated with ancient stone structures, with their findings aiding to deepen the historical legacy of the country, and of ancient Arabia. Using multiple modern technologies to record tens of thousands of sites, they choose some to explore in greater detail, to begin piecing together a new chapter in the story of human civilisation.

Even after 10 years of filming in the backcountry we can only say that winter will dictate more of what you are about to see than us. The task is only to remain aware, continue breaking trail in the direction that beckons, and attempt to capture the impossible—the backcountry experience. Last winter we left our backyard in search for /Something Else/. Truth be told we found it.

Breaking Trail

Breaking Trail 2011

Last season Utah’s Wasatch Mountains and most of North America experienced a record breaking doozie, making our never ending mission to flatten as many snowflakes as possible almost easy. We estimate the number of crystals crushed to be somewhere in the trillions. If you’ve had the extreme pleasure of viewing one of our previous films, then the obscenedisplay of exploding snow will be nothing new. On closer inspection you will notice that Powderwhore is no longer focusing primarily on the telemark turn. BREAKING TRAIL will highlight riders of all disciplines choosing their own backcountry adventures. Warning! There are no shots of helicopters filming other helicopters or hankie-clad 16-year-olds hepped up on energy drinks spinning to rap music. And you won’t win a Jeep if you come out to a premiere. You will find a mixed bag of highly talented and dedicated individuals who enjoy hiking out into the unknown in search of turns and adventure.
