Sue, een jonge filmmaakster uit Engeland, krijgt een boek in handen van haar overleden grootvader. In dit boek schrijft hij over de vrijheidstrijders Bhagat Singh en Chandreshekhar Azaad. Als politieofficier heeft hij in zijn leven, jaren geleden, genoeg meegemaakt. Sue raakt geïnspireerd door zijn verhalen en besluit het boek te verfilmen in de vorm van een documentaire. Zij vertrekt hiervoor naar India en verzamelt wat studenten om in haar film te spelen; Dj (Aamir), Karan (Siddharth), Aslam (Kunal), Laxman (Atul), Sukhi (Sharman) en Sonia. Deze vijf persoonlijkheden hebben allemaal andere ideeën over het leven. Tijdens het filmen van de documentaire raken ze helemaal in de ban van de vroegere vrijheidstrijders. Het lijkt of de tijd stil is blijven staan en de geschiedenis zich herhaalt.

Het verhaal volgt een groep Kroatische vluchtelingen die tijdens de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd van Kroatië door Servische troepen hun geboorteplaats Vukovar hebben moeten verlaten. De mensen worden gevestigd op een treinstation in een dorp in de buurt van Vukovar, waar ze in een trein wonen die is aangepast om als tijdelijk onderkomen te dienen. De situatie wordt somber naarmate de datum van hun terugkeer onzeker blijkt te zijn en de levens van de overlevenden en vluchtelingen worden steeds ingewikkelder omdat ze gebukt gaan onder PTSP en sterke gevoelens van hoop om terug te keren naar hun woonplaats.

Tijdens de eerste Anglo-Boerenoorlog 1880-1881 worden de gebeurtenissen in de aanloop naar dit laatste gevecht beschreven die eindigen in een van de meest vernederende nederlagen voor Groot-Brittannië in de geschiedenis.
