Een Italiaanse vissersboot redt een drenkeling uit de Middellandse Zee. De man lijdt aan geheugenverlies en weet niet wie hij is. Er zitten echter twee kogels in zijn rug en hij komt al snel tot de conclusie dat er geprobeerd werd hem te vermoorden.
We volgen 24 uur in het leven van een wezen. Het ene moment is het een man, dan weer een vrouw. Soms is het jong, vervolgens weer zo oud dat het op het punt staat te sterven. De functie die het vervult is eveneens wisselend; van moordenaar tot bedelaar, van zakenman tot monsterlijk wezen en van arbeider tot familieman. Het wezen lijkt vreselijk eenzaam en uitgeput door al deze verschillende gedaantes, waarin het met tegenzin moet moorden en van mensen moet houden die het niet kent. De vraag rijst waar zijn thuis en zijn familie zijn en waar het zijn gemoedsrust kan vinden.
