In de 19e eeuw behield China het monopolie op thee, die in het Westen geliefd en modieus was, en het Britse rijk ruilde klaprozen, geproduceerd in de Indiase koloniën en omgezet in opium, in voor Chinese thee. Overspoeld met drugs werd China gedwongen zijn markt open te stellen, en de Britten consolideerden hun commerciële dominantie. In 1839 voerde het Middenrijk een verbod in. De Opiumoorlog werd uitgeroepen... Groot-Brittannië kwam als winnaar uit de bus, maar er werd gehoor gegeven aan de waarschuwing: het land kon niet langer afhankelijk zijn van Chinese thee. Het enige mogelijke alternatief was het produceren van hun eigen thee. De Oost-Indische Compagnie vertrouwde daarom één man de zoektocht naar de geheimen van de kostbare drank toe. Hun missie was om de eerste plantages in de Indiase koloniën van Groot-Brittannië te ontwikkelen.
