In deze uitzinnige comedy van Neil Simon spelen Jack Lemmon en Sandy Dennis de sterren van de hemel als de provinciale George en Gwen Kellerman. In het kader van een prestigieuze promotie moeten George (Lemmon) en zijn vrouw (Dennis) hun huis in het stadje Twin Oaks verruilen voor een woning in New York City. Vol frisse moed zet het echtpaar koers naar The Big Apple. De grote stad blijkt echter alles behalve een paradijs op aarde te zijn. In de film volgen we Joel (Jason Bateman), die een extractenfabriek draaiende probeert te houden terwijl er veel gebeurt in zijn leven.
