The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse.

If convicted, Assange could face decades in a US jail. In April 2019, Julian Assange was dragged out of the Ecuadorian embassy and sent to Belmarsh Prison for breaching his bail terms. Through WikiLeaks, Julian Assange published a trove of classified documents on the powerful elite, including war crimes committed by the military on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and embarrassing details from politicians' emails. The Assange Story pieces together accounts from Assange's friends, family and former colleagues to build up a clearer understanding of the personality and motivation in the man behind what's been called the 'biggest leaks in intelligence history'.

Diving for Gold

Diving for Gold 2021

Pinut-an barangay in the Philippines is dubbed the underwater Klondike for the massive deposits of gold ore on the bottom of the ocean. Since the 18th century, companies tried to establish mining operations there, but none succeeded: they were driven away by typhoons, landslides or low-profit margins. Ultimately the site was left for the locals. Though mining needs a licence, not having one doesn’t stop gold divers from doing their job. Nor do the immense risks diving poses to their health and the environment. Many divers suffer from decompression sickness, which sometimes leads to death. In the meantime, multiple tunnels they dig in the ocean floor in search of gold nuggets cause landslides. Still, it is the only way for the locals to earn enough for a daily serving of rice.

Why? 2014

Fifteen years after NATO's 78-day bombardment of Yugoslavia, memories of the bombing still haunt present-day Serbia. NATO killed over 2,000 people, hundreds were civilians, 88 were children. Serbs ask 'why?' above all. Why did NATO smash their cities, kill their children, bomb hospitals and schools? When the NATO bomb campaign began (on March 24th 1999) Jelena Milincic was a student at the University of Belgrade, and just 18 years old. When the first bombs shook Belgrade she cowered under a table with her mother, sister, and best friend. Remembering this 15 years later, they laugh nervously. Jelena takes Anissa Naouai on a road trip, to remember the victims, and hear the survivors of NATO's strike terror. RT presents 'Zashto?' (Why?) on the trauma of terror in Serbia.
