A young Cuban named Olga arrives in Spain with a scholarship convinced that she has landed the chance of a lifetime. Deciding to stay, she eventually becomes an illegal immigrant, suffering the brunt of marginalization and, unable to return home, having to get by as she can. Mari Jo is a young girl from a poor Valencian suburb, born into a family with nothing but problems. Fate has marked her life as she too becomes an outcast. Both end up working illegally in a furniture factory where they earn three times less than the minimum legal salary.

Follows Carlos (Jorge Rodríguez), a young bohemian in love with Margarita (Ernestina Canino). However, their efforts to be together are endangered when her father catches them together without permission. Unable to be with her at the moment, Carlos embarks on a trip on a sailboat and ends up in the mysterious island of Mu, where he meets Alura (Raquel Canino). Will he remain with his newfound native love, or will he return to his longlost Margarita? Romance Tropical was one of the first Puerto Rican films with sound. The whereabouts of the original reels of the film were unknown, until they were found at the UCLA Film & Television Archive in 2017.

Pedro and Isabel disagree on the number of children they'll have when they get married. By contrasting the bustle of the city life with the more traditional agrarian life, the film provides an examination of several attitudes toward family planning.
