After 50 years, Marek remembers his dangerous adventure as a five-year-old, when he and his friend Itzek left a Polish transit camp one night in 1942 – a few days before their evacuation to Auschwitz – to go get the toys they forgot at the ghetto. Based on Becker's personal memories and his 1980 short story "The Wall."

Private detective Josef Matula is with his usual companion, the dog Dr. med. Renz, on the way to Italy, when his rickety minibus engine fails. During his subsequent unplanned stay in a small mountain village he discovers the body of a mountaineer while hiking. He begins to investigate the death and by the look of it, it could be either accident, suicide or even a murder. However, the conspiratorial community is not very enthusiastic about his investigations and when he comes close to solving the case, his own life is in danger too.

The son of a farmer is bathed in his blood in front of an isolated mountain hut. There is no record of the attacker. Two investigators disappear without a trace. Years later, policeman Brenner sets out to find his colleagues.

Lilo is a resolute woman, creative in her mind and images, until a devastating diagnosis tears her from everyday life and forces her to face unpleasant truths. Without further ado, she makes her escape with the help of the illegal truck driver Sami and unintentionally sets the whole family in motion.
