1890년대 골드러시 시대, 금광이 발견되었다는 소식에 일확천금을 노린 수많은 사람들이 알래스카로 몰려든다. 따뜻한 캘리포니아의 부유한 가정에서 길러지던 개 ‘벅’은 한순간 납치되어 알래스카 유콘으로 팔려가게 되고 안락했던 과거와는 전혀 다른 삶이 시작된다. 광활한 대자연, 거친 약육강식의 세계 속 우편배달 썰매견 팀의 신참이 된 ‘벅’. 끊임없는 역경이 그를 찾아오지만, 진정한 용기는 ‘벅’을 점차 팀의 리더 자리에 오르게 하는데…
10대 소년 잭은 북미에서 가족들을 위해 금광을 개발하다가 돌아가신 아버지의 금광 채굴권을 찾아 혼자서 유칸 지방으로 들어간다. 그곳은 금광 열기로 온 세계 사람들이 몰려와 온갖 범죄가 무난하던 곳이었다. 여비까지 날치기 당한 잭은 다행히 아버지의 친구 알렉스를 만나 함께 개썰매를 이끌고 금광지대로 가게된다. 설원에서 어미를 여읜 새끼 늑대를 본 잭은 혼자 살아 남을 수 있을까 염려 하는데 마침 지나가던 인디언이 그 늑대를 데려다 흰 송곳니 이름을 따서 '화이트 팽'이라 이름짓고 키우게 된다. 그러나 늑대는 커가면서 용맹을 더해가서 인디언 추장을 따라 시내를 나갔다가 투견을 업으로 하는 사내의 개를 물어 보상금 시비가 벌어진다. 사내가 늑대를 달라고 하는 바람에 추장은 하는수 없이 늑대를 건네주고 만다. 투견을 하던 늑대는 처음엔 싸움에 이겨 돈을 많이 벌어 주지만 나중에 불독과 싸우다 목을 물려 위기에 빠진다. 물자를 사러 시내에 나왔다가 이광경을 본 잭은 띄어들어 늑대를 구해낸다. 알고보니 투견꾼 사내느 잭의 돈을 날치기한 사기꾼이었다. 이때부터 잭은 사나워진 늑대를 다시 사랑으로 돌보며 친구로 삼는데 성공한다.
록키산의 사냥꾼 존슨(Albert Johnson: 찰스 브론슨 분)은 다 죽어가는 투견을 헐값에 사들인 것이 악연이 되어 투견패들과 총격전을 벌이다가 그 중 한 명을 살해한다. 제보를 받은 카나다 산악 경찰대 소속의 밀른 상사(Sgt. Edgar Millen: 리 마빈 분)는 존슨을 출두시켜 사건의 진위를 밝히려 한다. 그러나 약자에게는 더욱 냉혹한 사회의 생리를 이미 체험한 존슨은 자신이 살인 누명을 벗을 수 없음을 간파하고 탈출을 결심한다. 이로부터 영하 40도씨를 밑도는 험준한 록키 산맥을 가로지르는 장장 48일간의 대추격전이 시작된다. 존슨의 탈출 행각이 집요해질 수록 그의 목에는 거액의 현상금이 붙고, 부하까지 잃게 된 밀른은 추격의 고삐를 죄어 온다. 굶주림과 수면 부족의 기사 상태에서 알라스카 국경에 다다른 존슨. 그는 끈질긴 추적자 밀른을 경외스러움으로 돌아보고, 밀른은 사정거리 안에 들어온 존슨을 향해 총구를 겨눈다.
제프와 그의 친구 벤은 소를 팔기 위해 와이오밍에서, 고기가 높게 거래되는 급성장한 마을들이 있는 캐나다까지 소몰이를 한다. 그들은 캐나다와 국경을 맞대고 있는 미국의 최북단 마을인 알래스카의 스케그웨이에 도착한다. 그러나 스케그웨이에는 자기 스스로가 법인 포악한 보안관 게넌이 있었고, 제프는 운이 없게도 소떼를 몰고 마을로 들어가다 실수로 거리 중앙에 있는 교수대를 박살내는 사고를 저지르게 된다. 제프는 게넌에게 사과를 하고 소를 잘못 몬 자신의 실수를 인정했는데도 게넌은 손해배상으로 제프의 소를 강탈해간다. 제프는 친구 벤과 함께, 보안관인 게넌의 사법권이 닿지 않는 캐나다의 도슨 지방으로 가 그곳에서 소를 되찾아올 기회를 노린다.
