少年テッドは、一本の木さえ育たないほど最悪の環境状態にある世界で暮らしている。彼が住んでいる人工の街だけは実力者のオヘア氏によって環境が整えられ、空気もきれいで過ごしやすく保たれていた。ある日、テッドは好きな女の子にいいところを見せようと、これまで誰も見たことがない本物の木を探しに行くことにする。そこで祖母から街の外で一人で暮らしているワンスラーのことを教えてもらい、木を探す手掛かりを得ようとするが……。
