יצירה מופרעת נוספת של גספר נואה (בלתי הפיך), שמתרחשת בטוקיו ובתוך תודעתו והזיותיו של צעיר על טריפ. נער שסוחר בסם הזיות עוצמתי, נהרג במהלך שהותו ביפן וחוזר כרוח לעיר הרועשת והצבעונית, כדי להשגיח על אחותו, שמתפרנסת כחשפנית. נואה מרחף מעל חיי הלילה הסליזיים של טוקיו, תוך ציטוט מ"ספר המתים הטיבטי", שמהווה השראה לסרט רחב היריעה הזה. החוויה כולה מובאת מנקודת המבט של הגיבור, כאילו הייתה המצלמה מורכבת על מצחו, מה שמטעין אותה בסובייקטיביות נטולת הגיון. זוגתו של נואה, לוסיל הדזיהלילוביץ' (Innocence) כתבה אתו את התסריט. עם פאז דה לה הוארטה (גבולות השליטה).

בשנת 1966 אספו בוב ראפלסון (רסיסי חיים) וברט שניידר, ארבעה צעירים מוזיקליים והרכיבו את להקת הפופ-רוק, The Monkees, לצורך צילום של סדרת טלוויזיה. הסדרה עקבה אחר מסע הופעותיהם ורצה עד 1968 השנה בה יצר ראפלסון את הסרט הפסיכדלי הזה עם חברי הלהקה. בניגוד לסדרה היחסית אכילה לקהל של התקופה, הסרט פנה לכיוונים סאטיריים ובוטים יותר. הוא משלב קונצרטים עם קומדיה, הומאז לאומנות הקולנוע וזעקה פוליטית פציפיסטית בשיאה של מלחמת וייטנאם. ג'ק ניקולסון כתב עם ראפלסון את התסריט, רגע לפני שכיכב ב"אדם בעקבות גורלו" וקנה את מקומו בהיסטוריה.

Naota is a normal boy who kills some time with a normal girl by a stream that flows underneath a bridge. Nothing unusual happens in this town. The fact that Haruhara Haruko crashes into the main character with her Vespa a short while later and subsequently hits him over the head with her Rickenbacker 4003 bass guitar doesn’t really make any difference to any other day here. The at first glance unconnected, bizarre events that don’t seem to follow any pattern whatsoever don’t change anything about Naota’s boring life, either – because nothing incredible ever happens in this town.
