Από τα ερείπια ενός μέρους που κάποτε ήταν γνωστό ως Βόρεια Αμερική έχει αναδυθεί το έθνος της Πάνεμ, μια λαμπερή Κάπιτολ που περιβάλλεται από δώδεκα απομακρυσμένες επαρχίες. Η Κάπιτολ είναι σκληρή και αμείλικτη και κρατά τις επαρχίες υπό τον έλεγχό της αναγκάζοντάς τις να στέλνουν από ένα αγόρι και ένα κορίτσι ηλικίας από δώδεκα μέχρι δεκαοχτώ για να συμμετάσχουν στους ετήσιους Αγώνες Πείνας, έναν αγώνα θανάτου που μεταδίδεται ζωντανά από την τηλεόραση. Για την δεκαεξάχρονη Κάτνις Έβερντιν, που ζει μόνη μαζί με τη μητέρα και τη μικρότερη αδερφή της, η απόφαση της να πάρει εθελοντικά τη θέση της αδερφής της στους Αγώνες δεν διαφέρει και πολύ από μια θανατική ποινή. Όμως η Κάτνις έχει φτάσει κι άλλη φορά κοντά στο θάνατο -και η επιβίωση είναι δεύτερη φύση για εκείνη. Χωρίς να το επιδιώκει πραγματικά, διεκδικεί σοβαρά τη νίκη. His childhood friends Seiya Takehaya and Ryohei Yamanouchi swiftly agree to join, but Minato is hesitant at first. Because Minato is the rare student with experience in archery, Tommy-sensei orders him to give a demonstration, which Minato does... except his arrow doesn't hit the target. She decides to join the club as the team manager to find inspiration for her work, only to become entangled with two of its members, Joo Seung Joon and Yoo Ji Wan.
